January - A New Year!
Mary Berry (Hucklebrry) is really a wonderful gal and is becoming more and calm, brave, curious and appropriately responsive. Her coat is really soft and shiny now and she’s lovely to hug. She’s been here at our Little Farm for just over nine weeks now and we can’t imagine this winter without her. Most exciting to me is that she’s had two little rides under saddle and we’re going slow but she’s going to be a great partner under saddle as well. She still feels really young, and because of her rough past, pre Colorado Horse Rescue, she needs a lot of confidence and time. I think she also needs to build muscle and be stronger so she can balance both herself and a rider well.
Mary Berry went to The Rusty Spur in Parker for a special saddle fitting with owner, Heidi Knabb. Mary was a real trooper as we tried on eight saddles or so. We found a little Circle Y that fits her well and I’ll also ride her in an old wintec dressage saddle I have. She’s brave and calm about saddling up and is doing great with mounting and making turns and we are building up confidence in walking forward. I’m pretty nervous too because it has been a good eleven years since I started Arrow under saddle. Also looking forward to bareback riding with Mary.
She’s the trailer princess and likes when there is a hay bag waiting for her as we go on adventures. She loads in the dark, in the cold, in parking lots and at parks. She’s pretty happy as long as Arrow is with her. Arrow continues to help with her training and we hope to ride Arrow alongside me and Mary to help her gain confidence and calm.
Mary got a purple blanket and halter (I’ll admit I really don’t like purple but it looks good on her and I hope her forever home will!). Mary is also showing us how much she loves kids - from infants to toddlers to kindergarteners, she really is quite interested. My friend’s 3 year old rode Arrow and then said “next I want to ride Mary”.
Very grateful to Colorado Horse Rescue for allowing us to foster Mary Berry Huckleberry and to them for saving her from a bad situation. She’s going to be a fantastic horse and I hope her family might come along this spring!
Here are some photos - catching up on blogging!
